Season Ends with a 6-1 Loss to Greenville

Box Score

The Spalding Golden Eagle baseball team saw their season come to an end Friday night in a 6-1 loss to Greenville College on the second day of SLIAC Tournament. The Golden Eagles finish the season with a 28-15 overall record, and finished second in the SLIAC regular season standings with a 20-7 conference record.

Spalding gave up two runs in the top of the first inning. Trevor Montgomery drove in Tim Osborne with a double to center field, and a Derek Ferch error allowed Montgomery to cross the plate to put SU in a 2-0 hole.

Spalding cut the deficit to one run, at 2-1 in the third inning. Matt West got on with a double to left center, and Derek Ferch drove him home with a single up the middle.

In the seventh inning, Greenville extend the SU deficit to three runs, scoring two runs to make the score 4-1. Dathan Berning reached on an error to lead off the inning, Mitchell Cernek reached on a bunt to third, and both runners moved over on a Jared Souhrada sacrifice bunt to first. Tim Osborne drove in Berning and Cernek with a double to left field.

The Panthers added a run in the top of the eighth inning to make the score 5-1. Shane Olmsted reached on a hit by pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on a McFarland groundout. Olmsted came home on what looked to be an out at first to end the inning, but the runner was called safe, allowing the run to score.

The Golden Eagles had an opportunity to chip away at the Greenville lead in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts by Kyle Barbee and Korie Vire left the runners stranded.

Greenville added a run in the ninth to make the final score 6-1.

Javier Guerra (2-2) took the loss, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits, while striking out 10 batters and walking one.

Nate Greenwell and Matt West led the SU hitters recording a hit apiece, and Derek Ferch drove in an RBI.
