Spalding Baseball sweeps Principia College, improves to 9-2 in SLIAC

The Spalding baseball team went 3-0 this weekend, defeating Principia College 4-2 Friday afternoon and 3-1, 11-2 in doubleheader action Saturday.

In Friday's 4-2 over the Panthers of Principia, through four at bats, Sam White recorded one hit, one run, and two RBI's. Pitcher Blake Beamer earned the win, striking out eight batters through seven innings.
 
Going into the third tied 0-0, Nathan Greenwell walked and advanced to second, he would advance to third on an error by the Principia pitcher while Golden Eagle teammate Ryan Selent was walked. After a Kyle Whitlock groundout to the pitcher, White singled, scoring Greenwell and Selent, putting Spalding up 2-0. Another error by Principia's pitcher allowed White to advance to second who scored off a Matt West single. Spalding ended the third inning with 2 hits, 3 runs, and a 3-0 lead over the Panthers.  Principia's Hunter Mehring drove in Thomas in the bottom of the fourth inning cutting Spalding's lead to 3-1.
 
After a scoreless fifth inning, Derek Ferch was walked and advanced to second off a sacrifice ground out by Ryan Mosby. Ferch advanced to third off a JR Belt single and scored on the next play as teammate Korie Vire flied out to left field. The Golden Eagles ended the inning with one hit and one run and a 4-1 lead going into the seventh inning. Principia's Thomas drove in Coyne in the eighth inning cutting the Golden Eagle lead to 4-2. Spalding would hold onto their lead as neither team scored in the ninth.

In Saturday's afternoon game, six players recorded at least one hit and three players ended the game with two hits apiece. Spalding's first run of the game came in the first inning off a Ferch RBI single which scored Matt West from third.
 
Principia's Bryce Murry drove in teammate Mehring in the bottom of the second inning, tying the game at 1-1 and scoring the Panther's only run of the game. After seven scoreless innings, the Golden Eagles scored two runs in the top of the eighth to take a 3-1 lead over Principia. Mosby scored Spalding's first run of the inning off a Belt RBI single and White scored the Golden Eagles' second run of the inning after teammate Greenwell was hit by a pitch.
 
The Golden Eagles held on to their lead as Principia finished the ninth inning scoreless. Pitcher Kyle Olliges recorded the win for Spalding, striking out one through two innings.
 
Spalding 11 Principia 2
The Golden Eagles took a commanding 11-2 win against Principia in Saturday's evening game. Principia took an early 2-0 lead, scoring runs in the first and fourth innings. Christian Thomas scored the Panther's first run of the game as teammate Gavin Thomas grounded out to the shortstop. In the fourth inning, Murray reached on an error by the catcher, which allowed Mehring to score, increasing Principia's lead to 2-0.
 
The Golden Eagles remained scoreless until their 3-run fifth inning. Korie Vire hit a homerun to open the top of the fifth inning cutting Principia's lead to 2-1. Spalding would pull within one as Jacob Woodruff scored on an illegal motion by the Principia pitcher. Teammate Matt West hit SU's second homerun of the inning to put Spalding up 3-2 headed into the bottom of the fifth. The Golden Eagles increased their lead in the sixth inning adding four runs to increase their lead to 7-3. Another illegal motion by the Principia pitcher allowed Vire to score Spalding's first run of the inning and teammate Ryan Selent tripled scoring Woodruff for the Golden Eagles' second run of the inning. Selent scored on the next play as Kyle Whitlock flied out to left field and Matt West scored the final run of the inning with Spalding's third homerun of the game.
 
Spalding scored four insurance runs in the top of the seventh finishing the game up 11-2 as Principia was scoreless through the final three innings. Chance Brinley got the win for Spalding, striking out one through one inning. Vire ended the game for Spalding going 2 for 3, recording 2 hits, 2 RBI's, and scoring 3 Golden Eagle runs. Woodruff went 4 for 3 for the Golden Eagles recording 3 hits, 1 RBI, and also scored 3 runs for Spalding.
 
With the sweep of Principia this weekend, the Golden Eagles improve to 14-8, 9-2 in the SLIAC.
 
Spalding is back in action on April 11 as they face off against Iowa Wesleyan College in Jacksonville Illinois.
