Box Score The Spalding (21-11) Golden Eagle Nine beat in-state foe Transylvania University (16-17) 4-1 Wednesday afternoon in Lexington, Kentucky.
Shortstop Derek Ferch led SU at the plate, earning his 200th career hit on his way to a 2-for-5, two RBI performance. Ferch becomes the first Spalding player to reach the milestone since the Golden Eagles joined the NCAA.
Senior Kyle Barbee (5-0) remained perfect on the season, allowing no runs on four hits, while walking on batter in 4.1 innings.
The Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard first, scoring runs in first and second inning, to take a 2-0 lead through two. In the first inning,
Matt West reached on a single to left field, advanced to second on an error, moved to third on a Beckman groundout, and came home on passed ball. SU's second run came when
Korie Vire scored from third on a
Jacob Woodruff groundout to shortstop.
After four scoreless innings, the Golden Eagles padded their lead with two runs in the top of the seventh inning taking a 4-0 lead. A Ferch single to left field brought in
Kyle Whitlock and
Matt West.
Transy answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning when Sam Liggett scored Zach Bynum on a sacrifice fly to right field, but SU went on to win 4-1.
The Golden Eagle Nine will be back in action Saturday and Sunday when they host a three-game series against Fontbonne University. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m., EST.
