Box Score 2 The Spalding University baseball team won the first two games of a three game series at MacMurray College, taking Saturday's games 14-2 and 21-6.
Spalding 14 – MacMurray 2Ryan Mosby went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs to help lead the Golden Eagle Nine to a 16-2 victory over the Highlanders in the early game Saturday.
Korie Vire (1-1) earned the win, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out three batters and walking one.
SU took the lead early scoring a run in the top of the first when Derek Ferch reached on an error bringing home
Kyle Whitlock who reached on an error to leadoff the inning, giving SU a 1-0 lead.
Ryan Mosby scored on a
Jacob Woodruff sacrifice bunt and Jessie Herrman followed with a sacrifice fly to center field scoring
JR Belt from third base to give SU a 3-0 through two innings.
SU added another run in the top of the fourth inning when Woodruff brought in
JR Belt on an RBI single to give Spalding a 4-0 advantage, but MacMurray answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 4-1.
A four run top of the fifth busted the game open for SU.
Ryan Selent reached on a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a Whitlock groundout to third, and scored on a
Matt West RBI triple. After a Ferch groundout to shortstop, West came home when
Drew Beckman reached on an error by Mac shortstop Jeremy White. SU's final two runs of the inning came when Mosby drilled a two run home run to give Spalding an 8-1 lead.
The Golden Eagle Nine went on to add six more runs over the next two innings and held MacMurray to one run in the bottom of the seventh to get the 14-2 win.
Spalding 21 – MacMurray 6The Golden Eagle bats stayed red hot in the second game, as SU sent 21 runs across the plate to beat MacMurray 21-6.
Once again Mosby led the way, going 4-for-5 with a home run, while sending five runs across the dish.
Kyle Barbee (4-0) got the win, allowing six runs on seven hits, while striking out one hitter.
After shutting out SU in the top of the first inning, the Highlanders scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-0 lead heading into the second inning. Derek Crouch singled to open the inning and Aaron Krummrich drove him in with an RBI double.
Krummrich advanced to third on an Alec Quadt groundout and crossed the plate on a Raustin Zahradka single. Jake Walch hit a two run home run to bring in the final two runs of the inning.
Trailing 4-0, the Golden Eagle Nine offense exploded for an 11 run top of the second to make the score 11-4. SU loaded the bases to start the inning.
Drew Beckman reached on a leadoff walk, while
Ryan Mosby and
JR Belt reached on singles to juice the bases with no outs. Back-to-back singles by
Jacob Woodruff and Jesse Herrman scored Beckman and Mosby to cut SU's deficit to two runs.
Ryan Selent walked in Spalding's third run and
Kyle Whitlock reached on an error scoring Woodruff to knot the game at 4.
Matt West followed Whitlock with a single scoring Hermann, and Ferch reached on an error at first base allowing Selent to score to give SU a 6-4 lead. The Golden Eagles went on to add five additional runs to take a commanding 11-4 lead after two innings.
MacMurray scored two runs in the fifth inning, but SU answered, scoring 10 runs over the final three innings. Including a seven run top of the seventh inning, where the Golden Eagles blasted five home runs (Whitlock, Ferch, Mosby, Belt, Herrman) in the inning to make the final score 21-6.
