Golden Eagle Nine Sweep Doubleheader Against IWC, 2-1 and 7-5

The Spalding University baseball team swept both games of Friday's doubleheader against Iowa Wesleyan College, 2-1 and 7-5. With the win SU improves to 16-8 on the season and 11-2 in SLIAC competition.

Spalding 2 – Iowa Wesleyan 1
The Golden Eagle Nine topped Iowa Wesleyan 2-1 in the first game of the day.

Matt West and Korie Vire led SU at the plate, each going 2-for-3 while driving in one RBI apiece.

Blake Beamer (4-0) earned the win, throwing a complete 7.0 inning game. Beamer allowed one run on six hits, while striking out five batters.

After a scoreless top half of the first inning, SU got on the board first when Matt West drove Kyle Whitlock across the plate with an RBI single to make the score 1-0.

SU scored again in the fourth inning to make the score 2-0. With two outs, catcher JR Belt reached on a double and came home on a Korie Vire single.

IWC's Justin Katich hit a leadoff homerun to start the fifth inning, but Beamer and the SU defense shut down the Tiger offense to escape with the 2-1 victory.

Spalding 7 – Iowa Wesleyan 5
Spalding followed up with a 7-5 win in the afternoon game.

Derek Ferch and Korie Vire led SU hitters, both going 1-for-3 with two RBIs and scoring one run each.

Chance Brinley (2-1) got his second win of the season. Brinley came on in relief of Jon Recktenwald, striking out three batters while allowing three hits and zero runs in 2.1 innings.

This time the Tigers scored first, Kristofer KIabunde hit a double scoring Travis Kostello giving SU a 1-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the first inning. SU responded, Kyle Whitlock reached on a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a West single and both runners advanced on a double steal. Whitlock scored the game-tying run on a balk and Matt West came home on a sacrifice groundout to the shortstop. Ryan Mosby scored SU's final run of the inning. Mosby reached on a hit-by-pitch, stole second and crossed the dish when JR Belt reached on an error by IWC right fielder Joe Katich to make the score 3-1, Spalding through one inning.

After three consecutive scoreless innings, Iowa Wesleyan scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to regain the lead at 4-3. IWC's first run came when Jon Recktenwald walked Nick Swanson bringing in Katich from third. The following batter, Tanner Anderson, hit a two RBI single scoring Luis Eric Torres and Scott Kieper to make the score 4-3. SU answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 4-4. Whitlock singled to shortstop to leadoff the inning and advanced to third on a West single up the middle. Whitlock advanced home on a Derek Ferch sacrifice fly to left field to tie the score.

The Golden Eagle Nine regained the lead in the sixth inning. Korie Vire reached on an error to leadoff the inning, then advanced to second on a balk and third on a wild pitch. Vire scored on Sam White sacrifice fly to right field to give SU a 5-4 lead.

The Tigers tied the score for the third time in the top of the seventh inning. After back-to-back outs by Torres and Kiper, Nick Swanson reached on a walk. Swanson then advanced to second on an Anderson walk and scored on a Chayancze Stirbis RBI single to left field. Again, SU answered in the bottom half of the inning. Ferch hit a leadoff single to start the inning and advanced to second on a Ryan Mosby single to right field. Ferch and Mosby advanced bases on a JR Belt ground out, and both came home scoring the game-winning runs on a Vire double to right field.

The Golden Eagle Nine will be back in action at MacMurray College Saturday, April 12 at 2:00 pm EST.
