Box Score The Golden Eagle Nine would lose their first of three games to Eureka in the weekend series, 7-5. SU moves to 9-7 on the season and 4-2 in conference play.
Â
Kyle Olliges (2-2) received the loss, going 7.2 innings, giving up seven runs, five of them earned, on eleven hits and seven strikeouts.
Â
Eureka took the lead quick, scoring three runs in the top of the first. With runners on first and second with one out, a single by Blake Lishka through the middle loaded the bases for Nate Louis. Louis would reach on a fielder's choice the caught Josiah Rose out at home on the groundball to third. So with the bases loaded with two outs and a chance for Olliges to get out of the inning unscathed, he would leave a pitch up in the zone to Trevor Teal, who would double to the fence and clear the bases, giving Eureka the 3-0 lead to end the first.
Â
SU would respond with a run in the bottom half of the inning, when a triple by Derek Ferch led to an RBI single by
Drew Beckman, reducing the SU deficit, 3-1.
Â
After two scoreless innings, SU would tie the ballgame in the fourth, bringing across two more runs. With Mosby on third base after a leadoff double, an error on the third baseman after a failed pickoff attempt allowed him to score and advance
JR Belt to third after he reached on a single. Later in the inning with one out, an RBI unassisted groundout to first by
Kam Bruner brought
JR Belt home, and tied the game, 3-3.
Â
Eureka regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning however. A single to right field by Cody Litwiller advanced Josiah Rose to third, and a fielding error by Mosby in right allowed Rose to score, giving Eureka back the lead, 4-3.
Â
SU would tie it up again in the sixth off a leadoff homerun by
Korie Vire over the left field wall. An inning later, SU would get their first lead of the game when a double by
Ryan Mosby to right field plated Derek Ferch from second, making the score 5-4.
Â
A disastrous eighth inning for Spalding would allow three Eureka runs to come across the plate, giving them the 7-5 lead. It seemed like it was going to be a quick three-up, three-down inning when the first two batters who came up got out on a pop-up and groundout. But a single and an error allowed the first run to score and tie the game up. Later in the inning with the bases loaded,
AJ Rogers would come in relief for
Kyle Olliges and walk the first batter he faced, bringing in the leading run. The next batter, Josiah Rose, singled past the second baseman, bringing in the third and final run of the inning and extending Eureka's lead to 7-5.
Â
With two more chances to score for SU, relief pitcher Stephen Davis of Eureka would keep the SU offense at bay, giving Eureka the 7-5 victory and their first win of the season.
Â
The Golden Eagle Nine will take the Red Devils of Eureka again Sunday, March 30 in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. EST at Derby City Field.
