Box Score In a game that combined for a total of 22 runs on 31 hits and 12 errors, SU came out on top, improving to 8-6 on the season by defeating Franklin College 14-8.
Â
Korie Vire led the Golden Eagle offense with three hits and two RBI while scoring three runs.
Â
Starter Blake Beamer would get the win, staying perfect for the season (2-0) pitching five innings and giving up ten hits, three earned runs and four strikeouts.
Â
SU would score in every inning they batted in except the eighth in this high scoring game. Franklin would take an early 2-1 lead through one. However, SU would take the lead after an RBI by
Ryan Selent and an error scored two runs in the second and gave them the 3-2 lead.
Â
After trading runs in the third, including one run off an RBI groundout by
Sam White, SU would keep the one run lead heading into the fourth. Franklin tied it up at 4-4 on an RBI single by Windler in the top half of the fourth, but an RBI single by
Matt West and an error that scored him from second would give SU the 6-4 edge over Franklin.
Â
An RBI single by Schomber the following inning would leave Franklin trailing by only one run, but would be short-lived due to a monstrous fifth inning by the Golden Eagle Nine sticks. Three of the five runs came on RBI, two on a single by
Kyle Whitlock and one on an RBI single by
Drew Beckman. The other two runs came on errors, one by the first baseman and another on an errant throw by the catcher trying to throw out Beckman stealing second. Through five, SU would have a comfortable 11-5 lead heading into the sixth.
Â
After Barbee came in and pitched a scoreless sixth, Spalding would extend their lead in the bottom part of the inning, scoring one run off an RBI single by Vire, making the score 12-5.
Â
Franklin would respond with three runs in the seventh, reducing their deficit to four runs. SU would extend their lead back to six runs after the seventh inning stretch, scoring two more runs on an RBI each by
Sam White and
JR Belt, to make the score 14-8.
Â
Right handed specialist
Chance Brinley would shut down the Franklin offense in the eighth and ninth innings, giving SU the 14-8 victory.
Â
The Golden Eagle Nine will take on Thomas More College Wednesday, March 26 at 4:00 p.m. at Derby City Field.
