Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Spalding took on the Panthers of Greenville College in a doubleheader Saturday, taking the 4-2 win in the first seven inning game and losing a nail-biter 7-6 in an extra inning second game.

Spalding 4 – Greenville 2
Starting pitcher Senior Kyle Barbee recorded his second win of the season, going for six innings, giving up only one earned run on seven hits and five strikeouts.

The Golden Eagle Nine were first to strike in the bottom of the first. Back to back doubles first by Sam White then by Derek Ferch would score White and give SU their first run of the game. Clean up hitter Drew Beckman would single up the middle, scoring Ferch from second, extending the SU lead to 2-0 to end the first inning.

Greenville would eventually get on the board in the fourth when a single by C.J. Opp plated Jared Storment from second, reducing the SU lead 2-1.

However, SU would extend their lead back to two runs in the bottom of the fourth, after a single to left field by JR Belt would bring around Drew Beckman from second base and give SU the 3-0 lead.

The very next inning, SU would score its fourth and final run on a solo homerun by Kyle Whitlock.

The Panthers would get on the board once more in the top half of the sixth after an error on Belt lead to their second run of the game, but wouldn't be enough as closer Jacob Woodruff would shut them down in the final inning, giving his team the 4-2 victory.

Spalding 6 – Greenville 7
Ryan Mosby led the Golden Eagle offense with two hits, both doubles, and three runs batted in.

Starter Kyle Olliges had a solid outing, going 7.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and three strikeouts, but would get the no decision in the loss to Greenville.

After both teams started the first three innings scoreless, Spalding would have a monstrous fourth inning, combining for five runs. Ryan Mosby would get two of his three RBI's on a double to center field that scored teammates Derek Ferch and Sam White. Next at bat would be JR Belt, who would bring Mosby home on a single to left field, giving SU the 3-0 lead. Later in the inning with two outs and the bases juiced, Kyle Whitlock singled to center field, bringing two more runs across the dish, extending their lead to 5-0 to end the fourth.

The game would remain 5-0 SU until the eighth inning, where Greenville would reduce the SU lead to two runs. With runners on first and second, the panthers would score their first run on a fielder's choice that plated Tyler Pilcher from second on the throw. After a walk by Kyle Olliges left runners on first and second with one down, Chance Brinley would come in for relief. Brinley would get an out his first batter on a fielder's choice, but a wild pitch against the next batter would bring in another run, making the score 5-2 in favor of Spalding. A walk to the next batter would lead to another wild pitch that plated another run, bringing the score to 5-3 to end the top of the eighth.

Spalding would answer in the bottom half of the inning with Ryan Mosby bringing in his third RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly to center that plated Derek Ferch.

With SU leading 6-3 heading into the ninth, pitcher Josh Drake would enter the game. Back-to-back walks would place runners on first and second with one out and Trevor Montgomery at the dish. A double to left field would plate one run and leave runners on second and third. That would bring Dathan Berning to the plate; Berning would bring in Tyler Pilcher on a ground out to the pitcher. With two outs, Mitchell Cernek would bring in the tying run on a double to right field, making the score 6-6. With a chance for Spalding to win the game in the bottom of the ninth, they would not capitalize, bringing the game into extra innings.

The Panthers would bring in one run in the top of the tenth on a sacrifice fly by Jared Storment, giving them their the first lead of the game, 7-6.

The Golden Eagle Nine would make things interesting in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with one out and Korie Vire at the dish. Vire would hit a grounder to the third baseman who got the out at home and left the bases loaded with two outs. Next up was Ryan Selent, who would line out to the first baseman, stranding three runners to end the heartbreaking 7-6 loss.

The Golden Eagle Nine will be back in action Tuesday, March 25 against Franklin College at 4:00 p.m. at Derby City Field.
