Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Golden Eagle Nine took two wins as the bats came back alive again today in a doubleheader against the Beavers of Blackburn College, combining for 30 runs and 32 hits.

Ryan Mosby (1-2) got his first win of the season in the first game of the doubleheader, going for seven innings and allowing two runs on six hits and four strikeouts.

The Beavers got on the scoreboard early in the first inning. Mosby hit the leadoff batter Vincent Birk, and a sacrifice bunt by Franklin Bush got him in scoring position. The three-hole Matt Mokriakow singled to right field to advance Birk to third base, where an RBI sacrifice fly by the clean-up hitter Jon Lowry to right field plated the first run of the game.

Spalding would respond in the bottom of the inning, scoring eight runs of their own. The leadoff batter Kyle Whitlock also started the inning by getting hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt by Matt West moved him to second, setting the stage Derek Ferch to hit a line drive single to right center to bring Whitlock across the plate. A single and another hit by pitch loaded the bases with JR Belt at the plate, where a double down the left field would clear the bases, making the score 4-1 with one out in the inning. The next batter Kam Bruner singled to left field, placing runners on the corners with the nine-hole Ryan Selent at the dish. Yet another hit batsman would load the bases for Whitlock to get his second plate appearance of the inning. Whitlock would get the job done, flying out to deep left field, allowing Bruner to tag up and score, making the score 6-1 with two outs in the inning. Matt West would keep things going, doubling to left field, bringing Selent and Greenwell across the plate. A fly out by Ferch would end the big inning, leaving the score at 8-1 in Spalding's favor.

Blackburn was quick to score again the next inning. The fourth hit batsman of the game would put the first batter of the inning Josh Voigtlander on first. A Cody Flowers base hit would put runners on the corners, where a sacrifice fly by Jose Osorio would allow Voigtlander to tag and score, making the score 8-2.

After a scoreless third inning, the Golden Eagle Nine would plate two more runs in the fourth inning. After two quick outs to start the inning, Drew Beckman would double down the third base line, placing himself in scoring position. The designated hitter Sam White would take advantage, hitting a single to the center fielder to score Drew. A bunt single by JR Belt would advance White to third base, and a balk would bring in Spalding's tenth run of the game to make the score 10-2.

That would turn out to be the final score of the scheduled seven inning game, giving Spalding the decisive 10-2 victory and giving them an even 3-3 record on the season.

The Golden Eagle Nine would keep things going with the sticks in the second game of the doubleheader against Blackburn, bringing 20 runs across the plate.

Kyle Olliges got the start on the bump for this game, going five innings, giving up six runs on nine hits and one strikeout.

Spalding would be first to strike in the bottom of the first. A single and a stolen base by the leadoff batter Whitlock would allow West to hit an RBI single through the left side and bring Whitlock across for the first run of the game. With runners on second and third later in the inning, White would hit a deep fly ball to center, giving him the RBI as West tagged and scored from third. The inning would end with Spalding leading 2-0.
A double by Greenwell got things started early for Spalding the very next inning. After stealing third base, West would reach first on an error by the third baseman, allowing Greenwell to score the third run of the game, making the score 3-0 to end the second.

Blackburn would respond in a big way the following inning, scoring six runs of their own and giving them their first lead of the day. With runners on second and third with two outs, the three-hole batter Mokriakow singled to left, bringing in both base runners. After two more singles loaded the bases, a big two out single by Aaron Moody to left field plated two more runs and left runners on second and third, giving the Beavers a 4-3 lead. The Beavers wouldn't stop there though, as the next batter Cody Flowers would keep the train rolling by doubling to right field, clearing the bases and ending the inning with the 6-4 lead.

Spalding would answer with eight runs in the bottom of the inning. A double and a passed ball placed White at third, setting up a sacrifice fly to center by Belt to bring White across the plate, reducing the deficit to one run. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Whitlock would double to left field, bringing in two runs, putting Spalding back in front at 7-6. Matt West would follow up the double with a triple down the left field line, giving him two RBIs and extending the lead to three runs. After Blackburn brought in reliever Jacob Baalman, Ferch would keep the big inning going by singling through the middle scoring West. Another double by Beckman to the left center gap would bring Ferch home all the way from first base, giving SU the five run lead. Spalding would score their final run of the inning when a sacrifice fly by Belt plated Beckman, giving SU the 12-6 lead.

After a scoreless fourth inning, SU would score four more in the fifth. RBI singles by White and Belt plated the first two runs of the inning and gave SU the eight run lead. A fielder's choice by Bruner allowed Belt to score and a wild pitch later that inning allowed Bruner to score from third, ending the inning with four runs, extending the Spalding lead to 16-6.

Blackburn would respond with a four run inning to start off the sixth. With the bases loaded, Mokriakow would hit a double in the right center gap, bringing in two runs. A hit batsman by pitcher Jarrod Messex would load the bases and bring Korie Vire on to pitch for the Golden Eagles. The Beavers would go on to score their fourth and final run of the inning when an error by the third baseman allowed Franklin Bush to score from third. The inning ended on a Flowers' fly out, leaving the score 16-10 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

A failed pickoff attempt allowed West to score for the first run of the sixth inning for the Golden Eagles. A two RBI single through the middle by White extended the SU lead to 19-10. After shutting the Beavers down in the top of the seventh inning, the Golden Eagle Nine would go on to score two more runs in the bottom half of the inning, where they would call the game after seven innings, giving SU the 22-10 victory over Blackburn.

SU will go for the sweep of Blackburn College Sunday, March 17 at 11:00 a.m. EST at Derby City Field.
