Kyle Whitlock
Box Score

After winning two against Millikin Saturday and combining for 26 runs between the two games, the bats went cold for the Golden Eagle Nine Sunday against Berea College as they weren't able to plate a single run through nine innings.

Pitcher Lawton Jackson (3-0) of Berea College was able to tame the hot bats of Spalding U., giving up eight hits, no walks and zero runs.

Ryan Mosby (0-2) gets his second loss of the season as he pitched four and a third innings, giving up six hits, walking and striking out three, and giving up two earned runs.

Berea got things started quickly as two singles by Johnathan Ives and Austin Hunt set the stage for a two RBI double by Adam Lyons over the center fielder's head. They would carry the momentum into the next inning. An error by the third baseman Beckmann advanced Alex Helm to third base, leading to a single up the middle by the leadoff man Blake Crowe, bringing Helm across the plate for their third run of the game.

Both teams would go scoreless until the seventh inning, where a solo homerun by Lyons gave him his third RBI of the day and Berea's fourth run. Sophomore pitcher Jarrod Messex would enter in the seventh inning with two outs. However, after hitting a batter and giving up a single through the left side that advanced Logan Hunt to the third base, a costly balk call on the right hander from Male High School would bring Hunt home, scoring Berea's fifth run. Korie Vire would enter the game as the pitcher and keep them scoreless until the ninth inning, where they would plate two more insurance runs an error by the second baseman Matt West plated Ty Shipley and an RBI double by Alex Puleo scored Ty Shipley, giving Berea the 7-0 lead.

The Spalding Eagle Nine would not be able to come through in the bottom of the ninth, ending the game with a 7-0 loss.

The Golden Eagles were able to put runners on base every inning, but weren't able to come through with timely hits, leaving 11 total runners left on base through the duration of the game.

The Golden Eagle Nine will begin conference play this Saturday with a doubleheader against Blackburn College starting at 4:00 p.m. EST at Derby City Field.
