Box Score Louisville KY- The Spalding University Men's Soccer team saw its three-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon when they dropped a 2-1 decision to Hanover College at home. With the loss, Spalding falls to 4-3-0 overall on the season.
Spalding had two great chances early on but they were unable to convert. First,
Colin Peters cut inside before sliding his shot wide of the post at the 2:30 mark. Shortly after,
Stephen Hubert would drive a cross in to the near post that
Abdullahi Abdullahi would send straight into the Hanover keeper's hands.
In the 13th minute, Hanover would capitalize when SU goalkeeper
Logan Spencer misjudged a set-piece. The ball flew over his head before hitting Hubert and falling right to HC's Drew Servais, who fired it home for the 1-0 lead. Despite outshooting Hanover 7-2 in the first half, Spalding was unable to find the back of the net.
In the second half, Hanover would capitalize on another SU mistake to double their lead. After
Trevor Bruner's outlet pass was intercepted by Matt Eldridge, the striker would take full-advantage, rounding Spencer and hitting the back of the net to make it 2-0 Hanover.
Spalding would increase their pressure in the final thirty minutes, eventually getting on the board when
Abdullahi Abdullahi took a shot that fell right to
Colin Peters. The junior forward would round the goalie for his second goal in as many days, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with just ten minutes to play.
Despite several chances in the waning moments of the game, Spalding was unable to push the game to overtime and suffered the 2-1 loss.
"We're disappointed to end the week on this note," Head Coach
Adam Boyer commented after the game. "After two great performances on Wednesday and Saturday, we expected a different outcome today. I thought our guys lacked energy and Hanover's work-rate was the difference," he continued.
"We're still searching for that consistency that defines a great team. With that being said, it's important that we learn our lessons from today and grow from them. We'll be a better team because of this," he finished.
On the afternoon, Spalding outshot Hanover 13-10 while the Panthers had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Spalding returns to action on Wednesday night when they host Anderson University (IN) under the lights at 8:00pm at Christian Academy of Louisville. For live updates, follow @Spalding_Soccer on Twitter.
