LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding baseball team dropped their final home game of the season, 5-3, to Blackburn Sunday afternoon.

HIGHLIGHTS

Trailing 4-0 in eighth, the Golden Eagles plated a pair of runs to cut the deficit to two runs. Garrett Wilson doubled to left to lead off the inning, and advanced to third and home on a pair of wild pitches to get SU on the scoreboard. An error by the third baseman allowed Clay Kelly to reach. Kelly moved to second on a wild pitch and raced home on a Joe Hatcher double to get SU within two runs.

A Beaver run in the top of the ninth pushed the SU deficit back to three runs. With one out, Ian Woodall singled to left and Coach Downs inserted Blake Benz to pinch run. SU looked to rally when Jacob Reece hit a ball up the middle sending Benz to third, and would have given SU runners on the corners with one out, but Reece was thrown out attempting to reach second for the second out of the inning. Benz scored on wild pitch, but Wilson lined out to center field for the final out of the game.

STAT LEADERS

Quenton Brownlee went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles to lead SU at the plate, while Garrett Wilson, Joe Hatcher and Matt Harper each hit a double.

Zach Jones (2-2) suffered the loss allowing four runs, on three hits, while striking out two batters in 2.2 innings pitched.

FOR THE FOES

Nate Bassett had a day for the Beavers going 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs batted in.

Tyler Durand (2-5) earned the win holding SU to three runs, on eight hits, while striking out three batters in a complete game effort.
