LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker to Fontbonne University Friday night at Derek Smith Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles record drops to 10-7 overall and 4-3 in SLIAC competition, while Fontbonne improves to 5-8 on the season and 2-6 in conference.
After dropping the first two sets 25-18, 25-20, SU fought back to keep the match alive by winning the next two, 25-15, 25-23. However, the Griffins came out on top after winning the fifth and final set 15-9. The big difference in the game came on the defensive end where Fontbonne earned nine blocks and 64 digs while SU only tallied five blocks and 55 digs.
Jessica Diehl and
Victoria Heitzman led the offense for the Golden Eagles with 14 kills apiece.
Jill Dunagan, along with Diehl and Heitzman, each earned four aces.
Katelyn Cosgrove handed out 39 assists on the night. For the Griffins, Kersten McDonough led the way with 18 kills.
The Golden Eagles will continue conference play tomorrow morning against Westminster College at Derek Smith Gymnasium. The match is set for 11 am.
