BEREA, Ky. – The Spalding University volleyball team took both games of today's tri-match at Berea College to improve to 3-0 on the season. The Golden Eagles swept the host Moutaineers 3-0 in the morning game and capped off the week with a 3-2 win over Centre College.
In the first match, the Golden Eagles took the first two sets 25-17, 25-20 before dominating the third set 25-12 to take the match.
Similar to Thursday's match, the trio of
Jessica Diehl,
Victoria Heitzman and
Ashley Chase led the Spalding offensive attack. Diehl and Heitzman finished with nine kills apiece, Chase finished with eight, and
Katelyn Cosgrove set up the hitters passing out 24 assists. Defensively Diehl controlled the net tallying two block solos and four block assists with no errors. Cosgrove led SU with a team-high 16 digs.
In the final match, the Golden Eagles topped the Centre Colonels in five sets falling behind 2-1 losing the first and third sets both 25-19, while taking the second set 25-20. Then, the Golden Eagles took the fourth set convincingly 25-14, and closed out the match taking the fifth set 15-12.
Diehl led the offense with 15 kills, her first double-digit kill performance of the season. In her first collegiate match, freshman
Alyssa Cosgrove finished with seven kills, and sister
Katelyn Cosgrove tallied six kills while passing out 29 assists. On defense, again, Diehl controlled the net with one block solo and eight block assists and
Koti Weaver finished with 16 digs.
The Golden Eagles will be back on the court when they host their home opener against Mount St. Joseph Wednesday, September 7. First serve is set for 7 pm EST at Derek Smith Gymnasium
