Golden Eagles split matches at Principia Quad

ELSAH, Ill. – The Spalding University volleyball team split their matches at the Principia Quad sweeping Blackburn, 3-0, before falling to Westminster, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in Elsah, Ill.

The Golden Eagles took their first match of the day sweeping Blackburn in three sets 25-19, 25-17 and 25-19.

Spalding was very efficient with their hitting finishing with a .348 hitting percentage, while the Beavers hit .173. Ashley Chase led the SU attack with 11 kills on 23 attack attempts, Victoria Heitzman totaled 10 kills on 21 attempts and Katelyn Cosgrove passed out 31 assists.

Defensively, Chase was the only player to finish with double-digit digs with 10, while Chase, Michaela Walker and Alyssa Cosgrove patrolled the net with one solo block and one block assist apiece.

In their final game of the week, the Golden Eagles gave up the final two sets to fall to Westminster 3-2.

Similar to game one, Spalding was the more efficient hitting team outgunning Westminster .192 to .140. The trio of Ashley Chase (15), Alyssa Cosgrove (10) and Victoria Heitzman (10) all finished with double-digit kills, while Jessica Diehl tallied nine and Katelyn Cosgrove passed out 38 assists.

Diehl was a force at the net, finishing the match with nine total blocks including two solo blocks and seven block assists. Koti Weaver led the team with 16 digs, while K. Cosgrove and Heitzman finished with 12 digs apiece.

The Golden Eagles will be back on the court Friday, September 24 when they head to Eureka, Illinois to take on the Red Devils of Eureka College at 8:00 pm EST.
