HANOVER, Ind. – The Spalding University volleyball team split their final two games at the Hanover College Tournament, falling 3-0 to John Carroll University, but bounced back to cap off the tournament with a 3-1 win over Anderson University to move to 6-1 on the season.
The Golden Eagles dropped their first match of the day to John Carroll 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-20) ending their five-game win streak to open the season. SU finished with a season-low 39 points.
Victoria Heitzman finished with a season-high 16 kill, as well as leading the defense with 14 digs.
Katelyn Cosgrove facilitated, passing out 26 assists, while also finishing with a match-high four blocks on defense.
The Golden Eagles got back to their winnings ways taking the final match of the day from Anderson University, 3-1 (24-26, 25-15, 25-17, 25-22). A trio led a balanced SU offensive attack. Sophomore
Ashley Chase led the group with a season-high 14 kills, while
Jessica Diehl tallied 11 kills, Heitzman chipped in 11 kills, and Cosgrove passed out 29 assists. SU also had balance defensively with four players finishing with double-digit digs. Chase finished with a match-high 19 digs, while
Koti Weaver finished with 13, Heitzman with 12 and K. Cosgrove tallied 10.
The Golden Eagles will be back on the court Tuesday, September 13 when they host cross-river rival Indiana University Southeast. First serve is set for 7pm EST at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
