Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Golden Eagles split matches at MacMurray quad

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – After a historic night at Webster that saw Jessica Diehl set a new school mark for hitting percentage, the Golden Eagle volleyball team split their games Saturday at the MacMurray Quad to move their record to 13-8 overall and 7-4 in conference.

Spalding rolled past the host Highlanders in the morning match sweeping them in three sets 25-22, 25-18, 25-19, for their second sweep in as many days.

With Diehl sidelined due to illness, senior Victoria Heitzman led the offensive attack tallying 14 kills and a team-high .353 hitting percentage, Ashley Chase finished with 12 kills, Alyssa Cosgrove added seven and Morgan Berning five. Katelyn Cosgrove facilitated the attack dishing out 29 assists, as well as anchored the defense with 14 digs, while Jill Dunagan added 13 digs and two service aces.

In game two, the Golden Eagles opened up hot taking the first two sets 29-27 and 25-23 to win their 10th and 11th straight sets leading back to last Saturday's match with Westminster. However, Greenville would win the next two sets 25-12 and 25-18 to force a fifth. SU raced out to an early 7-3 advantage, but the Panthers responded with a 7-1 run to take a 10-8 lead. The Golden Eagles showed grit, fighting back to tie the set at 14-14, but Greenville took the next two points taking the set and match.

Spalding had three players finish with double digit kills. Heitzman led the way with 18 kills, while Jessica Diehl tallied 12 and Alyssa Cosgrove added 10. Katelyn Cosgrove had an outstanding game passing out 45 assists on offense, while finishing with 37 digs on defense. Diehl also finished with six blocks, while freshman Michaela Walker tallied five.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action at the Fontbonne quad Saturday, October 15 in St. Louis, Mo. SU opens with Fontbonne at noon EST looking to avenge last weekend's 3-2 loss to the Griffins, and will follow with Eureka College at 2 pm.
