ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Spalding University volleyball team went unbeaten at the Fontbonne Quad Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Mo. The Golden Eagles topped the host Griffins, 3-1, in the morning match avenging a 3-2 loss to Fontbonne on September 30. SU swept Eureka, 3-0, in the final match to improve to 15-8 overall and 9-4 in conference play.
In the opener, the Golden Eagles dropped the first set 25-17, but bounced back to win the next three, 25-21, 25-8, 25-16 to take the match, 3-1.
Spalding hit a match-low .162 after racking up eight errors to lose the first set 25-17. The Golden Eagles and Griffins went back and forth in the second set playing to a 22-22 tie, but back-to-back
Alyssa Cosgrove kills took the locked up the set for SU 25-22. Spalding ran away with the third set jumping out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back taking the set 25-8 hitting a match-high .706. SU took the final set 25-16. The fourt set was close early with SU leading 11-10, but Spalding took six of the next eight points capped off by a
Morgan Berning kill to pull ahead, 17-12, and went on to take the set and match.
Alyssa Cosgrove led the SU attack finishing with 20 kills, while
Jessica Diehl tallied 15 kills on 21 attempts finishing with a .667 hitting percentage.
Katelyn Cosgrove facilitated the offensive passing out 44 assists. Freshman
Michaela Walker led the Golden Eagle blockers with four including one solo and three assists.
The Golden Eagles capped off the weekend with a 3-0 sweep of Eureka College.
SU and the Red Devils were neck and neck late in the first set playing to a 19-19 tie, but a
Jessica Diehl kill sparked a three point run pushing Spalding ahead 22-19 and SU went on to take the set 25-22. In the second set, Spalding got out to a 3-0 lead, but Eureka got hot taking 10 of the next 11 points and SU found themselves trailing 15-10. A Diehl kill ignited a 6-1 SU spurt that tied the match at 16-16 following a
Katelyn Cosgrove service ace. Eureka would pull ahead 22-20, but SU took four straight points taking a set 25-23 on another Diehl kill. The Golden Eagles completed the sweep dominating the third set 25-15.
Similar to the first match,
Alyssa Cosgrove led the offense with 19 kills and
Jessica Diehl finished with 12, while
Katelyn Cosgrove tallied 31 assists. K. Cosgrove also led the defense with five blocks, while sister
Alyssa Cosgrove led the team with 18 digs.
Victoria Heitzman and
Amanda Patterson also finished with double-digit digs. Heitzman finishing with 12, while Patterson tallied 10.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Monday, October 17 hosting Blackburn. First serve is set for 7pm at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
