ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Senior
Jessica Diehl set a new school record for hitting percentage to lead the Spalding University volleyball team to a sweep over Webster University, 3-0, taking the sets 25-17, 25-17, and 29-27. This is SU's second consecutive SLIAC win, improving their record to 6-3 in SLIAC play, and 12-7 overall.
Diehl's school record .818 hitting percentage also ranks tied for 9
th all-time in NCAA Division III history. Diehl tied her season high total in kills tallying 18 on just 22 attempts, while committing zero errors.
Alyssa Cosgrove added nine kills, and
Victoria Heitzman added eight kills to the SU attack.
Katelyn Cosgrove helped to facilitate the offense by handing out 37 assists.
Defensively, the match was even with SU earning 51 digs, to Webster's 52 and each team finished with three total blocks.
Katelyn Cosgrove and
Jill Dunagan each earned 12 digs apiece. The Golden Eagles were able to serve eight aces, while Webster only served one.
The first set was back and forth until SU went on a few late runs to win 25-17. The Golden Eagles only gave up two errors while Webster allowed six.
In the second set, SU took an early 6-2 lead. Webster was able to come back within two, but a late SU attack led to an 8-0 run and another 25-17 set win for the Golden Eagles.
Webster made the 7-0 run late in the third set to keep the match alive, but was unable to defend SU and Diehl's attack. The Golden Eagles took the set 29-27.
The Golden Eagles will be back at it in the morning at the MacMurray Quad in Jacksonville, Ill on October 8th. They will take on MacMurray College at 11 am and Greenville College at 1 pm.
