LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University volleyball team celebrated senior night with a 3-1 win over Franklin College Wednesday night at Derek Smith Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles improve their record to 20-8 overall.
SU's attack was led by
Alyssa Cosgrove, who had 25 kills on the night, a season-high for the freshman. Adding to the offensive efforts were seniors,
Victoria Heitzman, who tallied 18 kills, and
Jessica Diehl, who finished with 16. Setter,
Katelyn Cosgrove handed out 56 assists. Heitzman also anchored the defense with 20 digs, while Diehl and
Michaela Walker totaled three blocks apiece.
The Golden Eagles got off to an early lead in the first set, but a late 8-0 run by the Grizzlies kept them alive. Ultimately, two key kills by
Katelyn Cosgrove ended the first set 25-23. Due to a few attack errors, SU dropped the second set 25-20, but rallied back to win the next two 26-24 and 28-26. The final two sets were very close, but big time kills by A. Cosgrove, Diehl, and Heitzman ended the match 3-1.
Next, the Golden Eagles will host the Spalding Quad at the Southern Indiana Sports Complex in New Albany, Ind., Saturday, October 29
th. SU will face Greenville College in the 11 am match, followed by a match against Principia at 1 pm.
