Golden Eagles split matches against Greenville and Principia to end regular season

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Spalding University volleyball team closed out the regular season hosting a quad-match at the Southern Indiana Sports Complex in New Albany, Ind. The Golden Eagles split their matches dropping the morning match to Greenville, 3-1, but bounced back to sweep Principia, 3-0. Spalding concludes the regular season with a 21-9 overall record, and a 13-5 mark in conference play earning the number three seed in next Saturday's SLIAC Tournament.

An error plagued match resulted in a 3-1 loss to Greenville in their 11 AM match. The Golden Eagles finished with 47 kills to Greenville's 38, but were outhit .299 to .176 due to 24 attack errors. Alyssa Cosgrove (16), Victoria Hietzman (12) and Jessica Diehl (10) each finished with double digit kills, but all three were held under at .250 hitting percentage. Katelyn Cosgrove passed out 37 assists and Kaitlyn Hall picked up four service aces.

The Golden Eagles rebounded in the game two sweeping Principia 25-16, 25-17, 25-20. SU didn't have the output of kills as they did against Greenville, but attacked much more efficiently hitting at a .284 clip. Alyssa Cosgrove led the attack tallying 16 kills on 30 attacks with four errors resulting in a .400 hitting percentage, while Morgan Berning added seven kills and Katelyn Cosgrove connected on 30 assists. Defensively, Koti Weaver anchored the back row with 10 digs and Michaela Walker led SU in blocks with two.

Up next, the Golden Eagles will play in the 2016 SLIAC Tournament Saturday, November 5. The host site will be either Greenville College (Greenville, Ill.) or Westminster College (Fulton, Mo.). The site will be decided Wednesday evening when the Blue Jays and Panthers faceoff at 8:00 pm EST.
