Lesher's golden goal tops Webster to clinch SLIAC regular season championship

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Senior Joey Lesher scored in overtime pushing SU past Webster, 1-0, clinching the SLIAC regular-season conference championship, the first in program history. The win also clinches the top seed in the SLIAC Tournament. Spalding will host the No. 4 seeded team in the first round, Thursday, November 3 at Champions Trace.  With the win the Golden Eagles improve to 10-6-0 overall and 8-0-0 in SLIAC play, while the Gorloks slip to 6-9-0 and 4-3-0 in conference.

Despite dominating the first half possession, the Golden Eagles couldn't find the back of the net and went to the half tied at zeros. Spalding took seven shots to the Gorloks one in the first half putting shots on frame in the 5th (Osman Hussein), 32nd (Kornell Hilliard) and 34th (Leslie Chu) minute, but all three were saved by the WU keeper.

Over the next 45 minutes, Spalding and Webster would trade shots. Each taking seven shots apiece with two shots apiece coming on goal. The Golden Eagles nearly put it away late with a flurry of shots in final three minutes of regulation, with Osman Hussein striking a shot on goal that was saved.

Neither team was able to get a shot early in the overtime period, but the Golden Eagles seized the opportunity when awarded a corner kick nearly eight minutes into OT. Jacob Holehan lined the corner into the box where it was headed out by a Gorlok defender. Lesher took the ball just left of the circle, and fired a left-footed volley past the keeper and a diving Gorlok into the side netting to give the Golden Eagles the 1-0 victory.

Spalding will close out the regular season game and celebrate senior day Saturday, October 29 when they host Iowa Wesleyan. Kickoff is at 3 pm at Champions Trace.
