Box Score 3 The Golden Eagle Nine dropped all three games of their weekend series at No. 2 ranked Webster University, 9-5, 4-1 and 4-3.
Spalding 5 – Webster 9SU lost game one of the series 9-5. SU fell behind 8-2 through four innings and trailed 9-2 heading into the seventh.
The Golden Eagle Nine scored three runs in the top of the seventh, but their rally fell short on a
Ryan Mosby force out at second base.
Matt West led SU at the plate, going 3-for-3 with one RBI and scored two runs. Derek Ferch drove in two RBIs on 1-of-4 hitting.
Javier Gurerra (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out one batter and walking two in 2.0 innings of work.
The Gorloks scored first to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Taylor Stoulp drove in Corey Lasky on a single.
After a scoreless second inning, SU tied the game 1-1 in the top of the third.
Jacob Woodruff reached on a double and came home on a
Matt West RBI single. However, Webster answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 4-1 advantage after three.
The Gorloks added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 8-1. Stoulp drove in Lasky for the second time on the day, Joe Winckel followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Ryan Hall, and Brett Buchanan hit a two run bomb to cap off the inning.
Matt West led off the sixth inning, reaching on a hit-by-pitch and advanced to second on a
Drew Beckman walk. Following a Mosby strikeout,
JR Belt hit a single to score West from second to get SU within six runs at 8-2. Again, the Gorloks answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring on a Stoulp single that brought in Lasky for the third time to make the score 9-2.
SU rallied in the seventh inning, but fell short losing 9-5. Derek Ferch hit a two RBI triple scoring Woodruff and West, and Beckman followed with a single that scored Ferch.
Spalding 1 – Webster 4The Golden Eagle bats went cold, only recording four hits and one run as they lost game two of the series 4-1.
Freshman
Drew Beckman led SU hitters, going 1-for-3 with one RBI.
Ryan Mosby (2-5) got the loss, giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out four in 7.0 innings.
Again, the Goloks struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a Jeff Kammer solo home run.
SU tied the game 1-1 in the top of fourth inning. Derek Ferch reached on a double and
Drew Beckman brought Ferch across the plate with RBI single to center field. However, Webster scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead.
The Gorloks added a run in the seventh inning and SU stranded three runners in the eighth and ninth innings to drop game two 4-1.
Spalding 3 – Webster 4The Golden Eagles dug themselves into a 3-0 deficit through seven innings in game three. SU battled back to tie the game 3-3 in the top of the eighth, but Webster scored in the bottom half of the inning to edge Spalding 4-3.
After three scoreless innings, Webster's Charlie Gandolfi scored the first run of the game on a
JR Belt error. Shortstop Matt Wollmik drove in Kevin Kojs to give the Gorloks a 2-0 lead, and the Gorloks added a run in the sixth to take a 3-0 advantage into the seventh.
The Golden Eagle bats finally came alive in the top of the eighth inning.
Jacob Woodruff reached on a single to lead off the inning, stole second, and advanced to third on a
Kyle Whitlock single.
Matt West singled bringing Woodruff across the dish for SU's first run of the game, as well as advancing Whitlock to second. Whitlock and West then advanced on a balk, giving SU runners on second and third with no outs. Derek Ferch followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Whitlock and advanced West to third, and
Drew Beckman drove in Spalding's final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in West for the game-tying run.
Again, the Gorloks answered, Ian Foege hit a two-out RBI single to bring home Brett Buchanan for the game-winning run.
SU had an opportunity to tie the game in the top of the ninth, with
JR Belt on third with two outs, but
Kyle Whitlock struck out and the Gorloks completed the sweep.
West and Ferch led SU at the dish, each tallying two hits and driving in one run apiece.
Chance Brinley (4-1) received the loss, allowing zero runs on one hit with no strikeouts or walks in 0.2 innings.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Monday, April 21 at Greenville College. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m., EST. The game will be broadcast live at bbsnonline.com.
