Box Score 2 The Spalding U. baseball team won both games of their doubleheader against Millikin University Saturday afternoon at Derby City Field. The Golden Eagle Nine took the first game 15-1 in seven innings, and followed it up with an 11-1 win in the second game.
SU jumped on Millikin early, scoring eight runs in the first inning, taking an 8-0 advantage. Four Golden Eagles were hit by pitches, and another walked.
Matt West ripped a double to left field scoring
Kyle Whitlock for Spalding's first run of the game. Whitlock scored SU's final run of the inning on a Derek Ferch double to left field.
The Golden Eagles went on to drive in seven more runs over the next five innings as they rolled to a 15-1 victory.
Matt West led SU at the plate going 2-for-3 with five RBI and scored two runs, while
JR Belt and Derek Ferch drove in two runs apiece.
Freshman Blake Beamer (1-0) got his first career win, allowing one run on six hits, with six strikeouts.
After heading into the bottom of the fifth inning tied 1-1, the Golden Eagle Nine scored six runs to end the inning and added four runs in the seventh to run away with the second game 11-1.
Austin Drake drove in Nathan Greenwell in the third inning to score SU's first run of the game to make the score 1-0, but The Big Blue's Brian Ekiss scored Cody Blunk on an RBI single to right center to knot the score at 1.
From there it was all Spalding. Drake drove in his second run of the game, plating
Kam Bruner on an RBI bunt. Derek Ferch capped off the six run inning, crossing the plate after a Kyle Davidson wild pitch to give SU a 7-1 lead after five innings.
Spalding added four runs in the seventh inning. Nathan Greenwell sent a shot to center field scoring
Blake Patterson and
Matt West, and scored on an error at first by Ekiss.
Sam White scored the final run of the game on an error by MU center fielder Cody Blunk to make the score 11-1.
West, Ferch and Greenwell each tallied two hits, and Jesse Herman drove in two runs to lead SU hitters.
Kyle Olliges (1-1) recorded his first career win on the mound. Olliges allowed one run on four hits, while striking out six batters and walking three.
The Golden Eagle Nine will be back in action Sunday, March 9 against Berea College at Derby City Field; first pitch is at 3:00 p.m., EST.
