William Barber returned in a big way, coming off the bench to score 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting to lead the Spalding University men's basketball team to a 66-60 win at Greenville College late Thursday night.
Spalding trailed for the majority of the first half, and found themselves down by seven points after a 13-5 Tiger run made the score 26-19 with 6:10 left in the half.
Thomas Blakemore knocked down a jump shot, and Barber hit a jumper and a three-point basket down the stretch, helping spark an 11-4 Spalding run to end the half tied at 30-30. Spalding would keep their momentum going into the second half, jumping out to a 12-point lead at 46-34 after Barber hit another three with 11:03 left.
Greenville wouldn't back down, cutting into SU's lead to trail by only two with 2:53 left in the game after a made jump shot by Ron Harris made the score 57-55. But clutch free-throw shooting by
Brandon Gabriel and Blakemore as the clock was winding down kept Spalding the lead, and gave them the 66-60 win over Principia.
The Golden Eagles will play in their final regular season game against Westminster College this Saturday, February 22 at 3:00 p.m. EST at Derek Smith Gymnasium. With a win Saturday SU will clinch their second consecutive SLIAC regular season championship, and the opportunity to host the SLIAC Championship Tournament February 28 and March 1.
