NEW ALBANY - The Spalding University volleyball team took the first game, 25-20, but host IU - Southeast swept the next three 25-18, 25-21 and 25-23 to take the match 3-1.
After trailing 8-9, Spalding outscored IUS 12-5 to take a 20-14 lead following a Grenadier attack error. However, IUS reeled off five unanswered points to cut Spalding's lead to one point. The Golden Eagles answered scoring four straight points and took the set on an E.C. Burkman kill.
Despite winning the first set, the Golden Eagles dropped the next three to lose the match, 3-1.
E.C. Burkman led the Spalding attack with 17 kills,
Jessica Diehl added nine, and
Katelyn Cosgrove passed out 38 assists.
On defense,
Casey Wilkerson tallied a team-high 22 digs, while Diehl held down the net with five blocks.
The Golden Eagles will hit the road for the next two weeks. SU's first stop is a tri-match at Eureka College Saturday, October 4. Spalding will start the day with a match against the host Red Devils at 11:00 a.m. EST, followed by a match with Westminster at 1:00 p.m. EST.
