Golden Eagles sweep Blackburn and MacMurray

NEW ALBANY – The Spalding University volleyball team earned a pair of wins sweeping Blackburn College and MacMurray College Saturday afternoon improving to 12-15 overall and 9-5 in the SLIAC.

With only four conference games remaining, SU currently ranks fourth in the SLIAC standings, one game ahead of fifth place Principia College.

The Golden Eagles opened the day beating Blackburn. Spalding dominated the first set 25-11, and took the second set 25-13 behind an outstanding .481 kill percentage. SU hit a match low .276 in the third set, but managed to win the set 25-20 to complete the sweep.

Elisa Burkman piloted the Spalding attack with 13 kills and Katelyn Cosgrove delivered 34 assists.

Jessica Diehl led the defense with eight digs and one block assist.

Spalding concluded the day with a 25-16, 25-16 and 25-22 over the MacMurray Highlanders. The Golden Eagles finished the match with a .252 kill percentage, while Mac hit .082 for the match.

Diehl and Erin Downs had very efficient offensive games. Diehl registered a match-high .500 kill percentage throwing down nine kills for the match. Downs matched Diehl with nine kills while posting a .467 kill percentage.

Casey Wilkerson and Elisa Burkman anchored the defense. Wilkerson tallied a match-high 11 digs and Burkman added 10 digs.

Up next, the Golden Eagles will host Eureka Monday, October 20 at 6:00 p.m. EST at Derek Smith Gymnasium.
