Men's Basketball Knocks Off Westminster, 85-82 in 2OT

The Spalding University men's basketball team beat Westminster College in double overtime 85-82 Monday night. The win marks SU's 10th consecutive win as the Golden Eagles improve to 10-5 overall and 8-0 in SLIAC competition.

The Golden Eagles started the game ice cold, missing their first eight shots, allowing Westminster to get out to a 9-0 lead.

SU played from behind until Quayshaun Hamilton drilled a three-pointer at the 9:29 mark, giving Spalding a 20-19 lead.

A Brandon Gabriel layup gave SU a 32-27 lead, their largest of the half and Spalding went to the half leading 34-30.

Westminster outscored SU7-2 to open the half taking a 37-36 lead on a pair a Verdis Lee Jr. free throws three minutes in the second half.

Taylor King gave the Golden Eagles a 67-62 lead with 4:21 left to play, but SU missed their last five field goal attempts in regulation and Lee Jr. tied the game 69-69 with a pair of free throws forcing overtime.

A pair of Joe James free throws to start overtime put Westminster ahead 71-69, but a Hamilton jumper on SU's next possession knotted the score 71-71.

The Blue Jays took a one point lead on a Travis Cleveland free throw and held a 77-75 lead with 51 seconds remained, but Thomas Blakemore knocked down a jumper with 31 seconds left to send the game
to a second overtime period.

Lee Jr. connected from long range on Westminster's first possession of the second overtime giving the Blue Jays an 80-77 lead, but back-to-back Will Barber jumpers put Spalding up 81-80 with 3:46 to play.

After a pair of James free throws, SU trailed 82-81 with 1:52 remaining. Thomas Blakemore missed the go ahead jumper on Spalding's next possession, but Quayshaun Hamilton made a huge defensive play, stealing the ball from James and drawing a foul.

Hamilton knocked down both free throws to give Spalding an 83-82 lead. After a missed three-pointer Hamilton collected the rebound and was immediately fouled. Hamilton connected on both attempts to push SU's lead to 85-82 with seven seconds remaining. Joe James missed a game-tying three-pointer at the buzzer and SU escaped with the 85-82 win.

Brandon Goeing and Thomas Blakemore combined for 45 of Spalding's 85 points. Going paced the Golden Eagles with 24 points, while Blakemore added 21. Will Barber also scored in double figures with 18 points.

Joe James led Westminster with a game-high 27 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field, while Verdis Lee Jr. added 24 points.
