Box Score Cincinnati OH – The Spalding University men's soccer team used a big second-half to pull away from the College of Mount Saint Joseph, winning 4-0 on the road.
The Golden Eagles nearly jumped out to an early lead when
Justin Toller missed a breakaway wide in the first minute of the game off a pass from
Julio De Leon. Ten minutes later, Spalding would find its first goal of the game off another De Leon pass when senior Matt Hegele chipped the MSJ goalkeeper at the 28:30 mark. The goal was Hegele's first of the season.
Spalding goalkeeper
Mike Salamon made several key saves in the first half to send the Golden Eagles into the break leading 1-0.
Spalding would come out on fire in the second half, scoring three goals in the first fourteen minutes of the half.
Mohamed Musa received a pass from
Stephen Hubert and slotted the ball past the MSJ goalkeeper for his first tally of the season at the 37:31 mark. Just minutes later, Hubert would get in behind the defense on a De Leon through ball to score his second goal in as many games. Less than two minutes after that,
Jackson Cantrell would blast a free-kick into the upper-90 after De Leon was brought down outside the box.
Both De Leon and Hubert tallied 3 points on the night. Goalkeeper
Mike Salamon earned the team's first shutout of the season in goal, making 7 saves.
"We looked like a different team in the second half tonight," Head Coach
Adam Boyer remarked after the game. "Our guys made a statement in the way that they came out after halftime. Three goals in less than 15 minutes is a great representation of what this team can look like at its best."
"Most importantly, I am proud of our defense for getting our first shutout of the season. Further, it was a special night for goalkeeper
Mike Salamon as he played 90-minutes in front of his family in his home state." Coach Boyer finished.
With the win, Spalding improves to 3-2-0 on the season. They return to action on Saturday when they host Wabash at home. Kick-off is 2:00 p.m. ET at Champions Trace.
