Louisville KY- The Spalding University Men's Soccer team finished the 2013 season with a win, beating MacMurray College 4-1 on Saturday afternoon. With the result, Spalding improves to 10-9-0 overall on the year, earning their first winning season as a program since 2009.

On Senior Day for SU players Matt Hegele and Evan Childers, the two teams battled through the opening 45 minutes with neither team finding the back of the net. Despite outshooting MacMurray 13-3 in the opening period, the Golden Eagles were unable to put one past MC goalkeeper Austin Mickan.

Just seven minutes into the second half, freshman forward Jackson Cantrell would open the scoring, powering a shot into the goal to put Spalding up 1-0. Matt Hegele would tally the assist. However, MacMurray would respond just a few minutes later and tie the score at 1-1 when Cory Estes bundled the ball over the line.

But the Golden Eagles would score three unanswered goals to finish the game. First, Stephen Hubert slotted the ball home on a Mohamed Musa assist. Then, Cantrell tallied his second of the game and 14th goal of the season when he received a pass from Ryan Glynn and smashed a 25-yard shot into the upper-90. Dylan Andrews would round out the scoring as he tallied his first collegiate goal, heading home a Hubert corner kick in the 85th minute.

On the afternoon, Spalding outshot MacMurray 28-5 and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Mike Salamon picked up the win in goal for Spalding, making one save on the day.

"It was great to send our seniors out with a win today," Head Coach Adam Boyer commented after the game. "We so appreciate our seniors Matt Hegele and Evan Childers for their dedication to SU Soccer over the last four years."

"We have made a lot of progress as a program this season," he continued. "The guys deserve a ton of credit for their resiliency throughout the year and it is so important to see Spalding Soccer with a winning record at the season's end," he finished.

With a 10-9-0 overall record and 5-4-0 record in conference, Spalding finished in 5th place in the SLIAC standings, one spot out of the conference tournament. All-Conference awards will be announced next week
