Men's Basketball Beats Anderson 76-66

Sophomore guard Brandon Goeing scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Spalding University men's basketball team past Anderson University 76-66 Tuesday night, earning the Golden Eagles their first win of the season.

SU sped out to an early eight point lead, taking a 10-2 advantage on a William Barber layup at the 16:36 mark. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 21-9 after a Quayshaun Hamilton dunk and Goeing free throw.

Anderson answered with an 11-0 spurt cutting SU's lead to one at 21-20 with 4:18 to play. Goeing drilled a three-pointer from the wing on Spalding's next possession to push SU's lead to four and the Golden Eagles went into the half leading 28-25.

The Golden Eagles shot 42.9% from the field in the first half, including 33.3% from behind the arc. SU also held a 15-11 rebound advantage and forced the Ravens into eight turnovers.

SU opened the second half on an 8-2 run capped off by a pair of Hamilton free throws to increase their lead to 36-27. The Ravens outscored SU 15-10 to get within four points at 46-42, but the Golden Eagles responded, outscoring Anderson 20-6 to take a 66-48 lead and stayed ahead the rest on the way.

Senior forward Will Barber was one of three Golden Eagles who scored in double figures, scoring 16 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the field. Redshirt senior Quayshaun Hamilton finished the game with 15 points, while grabbing a team high five rebounds. Hamilton also had the highlight of the game when he stole the ball from AU guard Steven McCann and soared in for a dunk on the other end.

Junior guard Brandon Gabriel also had a solid night, scoring seven points, grabbing four rebounds, and dishing out a team-high four assists, while committing no turnovers.

Anderson had two players finish with double-digit points. Max Mullaun paced Anderson with 20 points, while shooting 70% from the floor and Scott Schwieterman tallied 14 points.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action Thursday, December 5 when they travel to Principia College for their St. Louis Intercollegiate Conference (SLIAC) opener. Tipoff is set for 9:00 p.m., ET at the Hay Field House.
