Box Score 2 The Spalding University men's basketball team opened their season at the Birmingham Southern College Black Tie Classic this weekend. Unfortunately, a very young Golden Eagles squad came out of the weekend 0-2, dropping Friday's season opener to Birmingham Southern 78-66, followed by a 67-53 loss to Emory University Saturday evening.
Spalding 66 – Birminham Southern 78
Spalding got out to an early 10-5 lead through the first five minutes, but the Panthers outscored SU 24-6 over the next nine minutes to take a 29-16 lead.
The Golden Eagles fought back, cutting BSC's lead seven on a
Brandon Goeing three-pointer with 3:23 remaining in the half. Despite cutting the lead to seven, the Golden Eagles trailed 48-28 at halftime as a result of a 14-2 Birmingham run to end the half.
SU could not overcome the halftime deficit, falling to the Panthers 78-66.
Senior forward
William Barber led the Golden Eagles with 16 points on 50% shooting from the field.
Larry Thomas led Birmingham Southern with 22 points.
Spalding 53 – Emory 67
The Golden Eagles got off to a rough start, turning the ball over six times in the first five minutes to fall behind 4-1, but bounced back, taking a 9-8 lead at the ten minute mark. Emory went on the close out the half on a 24-12 run, sending SU to the locker room at the half trailing 32-21.
A Deving Mayfield layup at the 18:41 mark cut SU's deficit to nine, but that's close as the Golden Eagles would get as Emory went on to win the game 67-53.
Seniors
William Barber and
Quayshaun Hamilton led the Golden Eagles in scoring and rebounding, each scoring 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
Jake Davis paced Emory with 18 points on 6 of 12 shooting.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Monday, November 18 when they travel to Hanover, Indiana to take on Hanover College. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m., ET.
