LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the second time, Spalding outfielder
Garrett Wilson has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team. A first team selection in 2020, Wilson earned second team honors in 2019. This marks the fourth consecutive year the Spalding baseball program has had a student-athlete named to the Academic All-America team.
Wilson, a double major in business and accounting, becomes the second player in program history to earn multiple CoSIDA Academic All-America honors joining Jimi Keating who earned academic all-America awards in 2017 and 2018. Wilson holds a 3.87 grade-point average, and will pursue a master's degree at Spalding University while playing out his final year of eligibility.
Due to CoVID-19, this year's CoSIDA All-Academic teams took career stats into the equation. Wilson, a Westpoint, Ky. native, was a Google Cloud Academic All-American in 2019, D3baseball.com Preseason All-American in 2019, as well as an ABCA and D3.baseball.com All-American and SLIAC Player of the Year in 2018. The speedy outfielder has a .400 career batting average, with 28 doubles, 14 triples and 7 home runs, and has amassed 63 stolen bases.
The Academic All-America Team presented by CoSIDA recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances both athletically and in the classroom. To be nominated by their respective school's SID, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore and a starter or key contributor with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his/her current institution. Voting for the Academic All-America team is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
