Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Golden Eagles defeated Franklin College in four sets Wednesday night, moving to 8-15 for the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first set was filled with short streaks from both teams. Back and forth the teams fought with Spalding scoring three consecutive points and Franklin returning the favor for their own run of three. Around the midway point of the set,
Mya Summers served a pair of aces, putting the Golden Eagles ahead 12-10. Summers added an impressive 10 assists in the first set, guiding the Golden Eagles to a one set lead heading into the second.
- Spalding started off the second set much better, getting away from the streakiness of the first set by scoring seven of the first ten points. From there, the Golden Eagle defense only allowed the Grizzlies to put together one run of three points, the rest being lone or pairs of points.
Savannah Kruse and
Samantha Robison combined for nine kills in the second set, with eight coming off a
Mya Summers assist. The electric offense coupled with the dynamic defense gave Spalding the 2-0 lead heading into the third set.
- Streaks came again after the beginning the third set. Following a back and forth first 10 points that knotted the game at 5-5, Franklin scored a series of five consecutive points. Then, Spalding put together a run of their own, scoring eight of the next ten points. The teams traded points, but the Grizzlies eventually pulled away, winning the set 25-19. A trio of service aces highlighted the third set for the Golden Eagles, with a pair from
Sarah Richards and a third from
Morgan Doolin.
- Ironically, the fourth set played out similarly to how the second did, with Spalding's defense shining. The Golden Eagles never gave up more than a pair of points in a row to a typically potent Grizzly offense. Spalding outlasted Franklin, winning the fourth set 25-19.
Mya Summers put together an impressive set, dishing out 14 assists, bringing her nightly total to 41. This is Summers' fourth time eclipsing 40 assists in a game this season and it also puts her at 609 total assists for the season, extending her lead over all other players in the SLIAC by nearly 100 assists.
