GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Spalding University baseball team dropped a pair of games at Greenville College, 3-2 and 4-3, Saturday afternoon in Greenville, Illinois.
Spalding fell in the first game, 3-2. The win improves the Panthers to 25-14 overall, 15-6 in conference play. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 26-13 overall, 16-5 in conference play.
Phillip Reedy (3-1) picked up the win,
Kyle Olliges (9-2) was hit with the loss, and Klaiton Wolff picked up his seventh save of the season. Olliges recorded his 300
th strikeout in a Golden Eagle uniform.
Matt Harper had a solid game at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a hit by pitch and run batted in.
Nic Chafin went 1-for-3 with a run batted in.
Joe Hatcher went 1-for-2 with a double.
Kam Bruner was 1-for-3 with a double and run scored.
The Panthers drew first blood in this one as they scored a pair in the bottom of the first inning, including a squeeze play that scored one. The Golden Eagles finally broke through in the top of the fourth on a run scoring single by Harper and another on a fielder's choice. With the game tied at two in the bottom of the fifth, the Panthers called another squeeze play and scored to take a 3-2 lead. That was all the Panthers needed as the Spalding bats were silenced the rest of the way.
The Golden Eagles dropped the second game, 4-3. The win improves the Panthers to 26-14 on the season, 16-6 in conference play. The loss drops the Golden eagles to 26-14 on the year, 16-6 in conference play. Austin Rexroad (2-1) picked up the victory, while
Hayden Davenport (1-3) was handed the loss.
Kam Bruner had a solid game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and run scored.
Nic Chafin went 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Issac Lineberry went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored.
Joe Hatcher was 1-for-3 with a double.
The Panthers struck first in this one on a Max Gabriel run scoring single in the bottom of the third inning before adding another in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. The Golden Eagles responded in the top of the sixth as Lineberry came across to score on a wild pitch, cutting the Panther lead in half. Greenville regained a two run lead in the bottom of the seventh on an error by the pitcher Slamko. The Eagles, however, got that run back quickly in the next half inning as pinch-runner
Quenton Brownlee advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an error by the Panther catcher after coming in to run at second for Hatcher. In the top of the ninth and down to their last out, Chafin singled through the left side, scoring Bruner and tying the ballgame at three. Greenville, though, wasted no time in ending the ballgame as they had three straight hits to start the bottom of the ninth, walking things off 4-3.
The Golden Eagle Nine finish the regular season with an overall record of 26-14, 16-6 in conference play.
