Baseball Falls, 3-2, in Friday Night Opener at Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Spalding University baseball team fell to Greenville College, 3-2, under the lights in Friday night action. The win improves the Panthers to 24-14 overall, 14-6 in conference play. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 26-12 overall, 16-4 in conference play. Jonah Moore (8-1) got the win, Jimi Keating (11-1) was hit with his first loss of the season, and Klaiton Wolff picked up his sixth save on the season.

Blake Patterson had a solid game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Clay Kelly went 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Jeff Thompson went 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Kam Bruner was 0-for-3 with a walk, stolen base, and run batted in.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead after scoring a run on a Bruner groundout in the top of the first inning. It took the Panthers a few innings, but they broke through against Keating in the bottom of the fourth as they scored a pair of runs with two outs. Spalding tied things at two in the top of the sixth inning on a Kelly groundout. Greenville, however, responded quickly as Mike Hardin took Keating deep for a solo shot to lead off the bottom half of the sixth and regain the lead. That was all the Panthers would need as they shut down the Eagles to finish off the slim victory.

The Golden Eagle Nine are back in action tomorrow as they remain in Greenville to take on the Panthers in games two and three of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm EST.
