MT. PLEASANT, Iowa. – The Golden Eagle Nine took both games of their doubleheader at Iowa Wesleyan, 6-1 and 4-1, Saturday afternoon in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.
SU defeated Iowa Wesleyan University, 6-1, in the first game of their doubleheader. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 15-7 overall, 5-1 in conference play. The loss drops the Tigers to 8-12 overall, 2-6 in conference play.
Jimi Keating (7-0) picked up the victory, while Ben Deweese (1-2) was hit with the loss. Keating threw seven innings of three hit baseball, while racking up fourteen strikeouts.
Jeff Thompson led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.
Nic Chafin went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a pair of runs scored.
Kam Bruner went 1-for-2, including a two-run homer and a base-on-balls.
Austin Drake was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Spalding took an early lead on a two-run double off the bat of Thompson in the top of the second inning. They doubled their lead in the fourth, as Chafin homered and another Thompson run-scoring double.
Kam Bruner added some insurance for the Eagles in the top of the seventh, as he went deep with a runner on for his fourth home run of the season.
Jimi Keating had far more than he needed, though, as he shut down the Tigers on way to a Golden Eagle game one victory.
The Golden Eagle Nine took the second game over Iowa Wesleyan University, 4-1, sweeping the doubleheader. The win improves the Golden Eagles to a 16-7 overall record, 6-1 in conference play. The loss drops the Tigers to 8-13 overall, 2-7 in conference play.
Kyle Olliges (6-0) picked up the win, Jake DiPego (2-1) was handed the loss, and
Chance Brinley picked up his third save of the season. Olliges tossed eight innings of one run ball, while tallying thirteen strikeouts and holding the Tigers to just five hits.
Matt Harper led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk.
Kam Bruner went 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored.
Nic Chafin went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, a stolen base and run scored.
Jacob Woodruff was 1-for-3 with a walk, hit by pitch, and run scored.
The Golden Eagles drew first blood in this one on the Harper home run with one out in the top of the second inning. They added to their tally in the next inning as Bruner scored on a wild pitch. The Tigers got one back in the bottom of the third, though, as centerfielder Joseph Belarde took Olliges deep for a solo shot that cut the Spalding lead in half. The Eagles responded quickly got that run back in the top of the fourth on a Bruner RBI-single. They stole an extra run from the Tigers in the fifth, as Chafin walked, stole second base, advanced to third on a
Clay Kelly sac-fly, and scored on a wild pitch. That was all the Golden Eagles would need as Olliges continued missing Tiger bats and Brinley came in to shut the door, finishing off the sweep.
The Golden Eagle Nine will be back in action Saturday, April 8
th, as they travel to Eureka, Illinois to take on the Red Devils of Eureka College in doubleheader action. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 pm EST.
