Golden Eagles Trounce Eureka, 12-1 and 20-2

EUREKA, Ill. – The Spalding University baseball team took both games of their doubleheader against Eureka College, 12-1 and 20-2, Saturday afternoon in Eureka, Illinois.
 
The Golden Eagle Nine took the first game over Eureka, 12-1. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 17-7 overall, 7-1 in conference play. The loss drops the Red Devils to 4-15 overall, 2-6 in conference play.
 
Cole Slamko (2-3) picked up the win, while Trenton Hall (0-1) was hit with the loss. Slamko threw seven innings of two-hit baseball, picking up seven strikeouts along the way to a complete game victory.
 
Matt Harper, who went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and three total runs driven in, led the offensive barrage. Blake Patterson went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in, and two runs scored. Dillon Sievert went 1-for-2 with a stolen base, two-run home run, and two runs scored. Kam Bruner went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer of his own. Jeff Thompson went 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base, and two runs scored. Jacob Woodruff was 1-for-2 with a walk, stolen base, two runs driven in, and two runs scored.
 
The Red Devils scored the first run of the day in the bottom of the first inning on a Clay Kelly throwing error. The Eagles responded quickly with a run of their own in the top of the second on a Harper single. Spalding broke things open in the next inning as they scored six runs on five hits, including a pair of two-run round trippers off the bats of Sievert and Harper. They were still hungry in the fourth as they tacked on five more runs on hits from Woodruff and Bruner. It was an all around effort from the Golden Eagles, as they went on to a 12-1 victory.
 
The Golden Eagles took the second game, 20-2, over the host Red Devils to complete the Saturday sweep. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 18-7 overall, 8-1 in conference play. The loss drops the Red Devils to 4-16 overall, 2-7 in conference play.
 
Dan Sanders (1-0) picks up the win, while Jake Miller (0-5) took the loss. Sanders pitched five innings of one run baseball while tallying five strikeouts.
 
Matt Harper led the way at the plate all day, as he went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs, three runs driven in and three runs scored. CJ Phillips went 2-for-4 with two home runs of his own, as well as four runs batted in. Ian Woodall went 3-for-4 with a home run and four runs batted in. Clay Kelly went 3-for-5 with a solo homer and two runs scored. Bryce Spalding was 1-for-2 with a three-run blast.
 
The Golden Eagles scored early and often in this one as they crossed the plate twelve times in the top of the first inning, including home runs from Harper, Woodall, and Phillips. They scored two more in the third on back-to-back solo blasts from Harper and Phillips, each with their second of the game. The Eagles tacked on one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and three in the sixth, including homers from Clay Kelly and Bryce Spalding. The Golden Eagle Nine hit a total of seven home runs as they steamrolled their way to victory.
 
The Golden Eagle Nine are back in action tomorrow, April 9th, as they travel to St. Louis, Missouri to take on the Griffins of Fontbonne University in more doubleheader action. First pitch of game one is slated for 1 pm EST.
