Louisville, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team slugged their way to a 13-5 win over Central College Saturday afternoon at Derby City Field. The win improves the Golden Eagles to a 7-1 overall record, while the loss drops the Dutch to an overall record of 1-1.
Kyle Olliges (3-0) picked up the victory, while Robert Stanton (0-1) was dealt the loss. Olliges threw seven innings, giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out five.
Jeff Thompson led the way at the plate, going 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Dillon Sievert went 3-for-3 with three walks, a run driven in, and three runs scored.
Blake Patterson went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.
Matt Harper was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Eagles drew first blood as they took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of inning number one. The Dutch answered with four runs in the top of the next inning on three singles, but Spalding answered in the bottom half with a run of their own. The Eagles would tie it up in the third, though, as Patterson homered and Sievert scored on a bases-loaded walk. Spalding would break the game open in the sixth inning as they scored three runs on just one hit. They added to their lead in the eighth as they scored six more runs, a total of eleven unanswered, to solidify the win.
The Golden Eagle Nine are back in action tomorrow, March 5
th, as they host Kalamazoo College in the final game of the 2017 Derby City Classic. First pitch is slated for 2 pm EST.
