LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team looked to sweep their series against MacMurray, but fell short losing game three, 9-3, Sunday at Derby City Field. The loss drops the Golden Eagles record to 12-6 and 2-1 in conference play, while MacMurray improves to 8-7 and 1-3 in the SLIAC.
Blake Patterson led Spalding at the plate going 3-for-4 on the day, with one RBI and a run scored.
Ian Woodall went 1-for-1 with a solo home run.
Cole Slamko (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs and two earned runs, on six hits, while striking out three batters and walking one, in 4.0 innings. Luke Jarvis (3-1) earned the win for the Highlanders.
MacMurray jumped on the Golden Eagles early plating a pair of runs in the first inning. The first coming on a double down the right field line by Alec Quandt, and Quandt raced home from third following an error on an attempted throw down to second that made its way into the outfield. Mac went onto add two more runs in the third inning pushing their lead to four runs. SU answered in the bottom of the inning, Patterson singled to center field scoring
Jacob Woodruff to cut the deficit to three, 4-1. However, that's as close the Golden Eagles would get as Mac went onto outscore SU 5 to 2 over the next six innings to win, 9-3, preventing the SU sweep.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action Wednesday when they head to Centre College to take on the Colonels. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm in Danville, Ky.
