LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team defeated Penn State – Behrend, 7-3, in the final game of their three-game set. The win improves the Eagles to a 5-1 overall record, while the loss drops the Lions to 0-3 in the early going.
Cole Slamko (1-0) picks up the win, while Alex Hajduk (0-1) was handed the loss. Slamko threw seven innings allowing just one earned run, while giving up six hits and striking out five.
Kam Bruner led the way at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI, including a go-ahead triple in the seventh inning.
Jeff Thompson went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
CJ Phillips went 1-for-2 with an RBI-triple and a run scored.
Nic Chafin was 1-for-3 with a run-batted-in.
The Lions scored first as Justin Foreman took Slamko deep down the left field line with one out in the top of the second inning. They added to their lead with two more runs in the third. The Eagles, however, were not going to go quietly as they responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth on a Chafin sac-fly, and picked up another in the sixth on a Sievert push-bunt that went past the pitcher. The Eagles tied it and took the lead on Bruner's two-run triple in the next inning, as they scored a total of seven unanswered runs to finish the ballgame.
Hayden Davenport came in and shut the door in relief, followed by
Chance Brinley who closed things out.
The Golden Eagle Nine will be back in action Saturday, March 4
th as they welcome Anderson University to Derby City Field. First pitch is slated for 11 am EST.
