LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team defeated Penn State Behrend, 4-3, in the first game of a doubleheader. The win improves the Golden Eagles to a 3-1 record, while the loss gives the Lions an 0-1 record to start off their season.
Jimi Keating (2-0) picked up the win, while Justin Rohrer (0-1) was hit with the loss.
Chance Brinley picked up the save, his third of the season.
Blake Patterson led the way for Spalding, going 1-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs scored.
Dillon Sievert went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, and a stolen base.
Matt Harper went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Spalding got out to a quick start, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Golden Eagles tacked on a run in each of the second and third innings, building a four-run lead early on. Keating was solid through his first four innings, but the Lions bats started to come alive in the top of the fifth inning, as they plated three runs to cut SU's margin to one, 4-3. Keating would settle down, as he got out of the inning and ended up working six and a third strong innings. Brinley came in to pick up the save with a couple of strikeouts to secure the win.
The Golden Eagle Nine will be back in action this afternoon as they play the second game of their doubleheader against Penn State Behrend. First pitch is slated for 3:05pm EST.
