LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University baseball team came from behind to defeat Penn State – Behrend, 8-3, in the second game of their doubleheader. The win improves the Golden Eagles record to 4-1, while the loss drops the Lions to 0-2.
Kyle Olliges (2-0) picks up the victory, while Eric Mikulan (0-1) was handed the loss. Olliges threw seven strong innings allowing just two earned runs, while racking up 11 strikeouts.
Jeff Thompson led the way at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, including a go-ahead triple in the bottom of the sixth.
Kam Bruner went 2-for-5 with a double, triple, and two RBI.
Jacob Woodruff went 0-1 with four walks and two runs scored.
Dillon Sievert went 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
Issac Lineberry was 1-for-4 with an RBI, stolen base, and run scored.
Blake Patterson was 1-for-4 with a triple, RBI, and run scored.
The Lions drew first blood as John Brittner took Olliges over the left field fence in the top of the third, but the Eagles got one back in the bottom half of the inning. The Lions extended their lead back to two in the fifth but, once again, the Eagles responded with a run of their own. Spalding tied the game on a Lineberry RBI single and took the lead in the sixth inning on Thompson's go-ahead triple. They added to their lead in the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits including back-to-back RBI triples from Bruner and Patterson.
Brett Champion came in and shut the door with two quick innings, sealing the win.
The Golden Eagle Nine will be back in action tomorrow, February 26
th as they go for the series sweep against Penn State-Behrend. First pitch is scheduled for 12pm EST.
