CONWAY, Ark. – The Spalding University baseball team capped off the weekend defeating Hendrix College, 7-5, Sunday afternoon in Conway, Ark. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 2-1 on the season, while Hendrix drops to 1-4.
Kyle Olliges (1-0) picked up the victory, while Colin Brown (0-1) was handed the loss.
Dillon Sievert led the way for Spalding, going 4-for-5 with a home run, double, stolen base, three RBI, and two runs scored.
Jeff Thompson went 2-for-6 with a RBI and a run scored.
Nic Chafin went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.
Jacob Woodruff went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored.
Spalding jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to a clutch, two-out single from Chafin. The Golden Eagles tacked on one more in each of the second and third innings on singles from Thompson and Sievert to go ahead, 4-0, heading into the bottom of the third. The Warriors chipped away for a run in the third, and one in the fourth, cutting into the Golden Eagles lead. However, the Eagles would get both of those runs back in the top of the sixth on a Bruner sac-fly and another Sievert single. The Warriors scored three runs in a long bottom half of the seventh, which saw two pitching changes for SU. Sievert quickly got one of those runs back with a homer to lead off the next half inning and that's all the Golden Eagles would need as they went on to victory.
The Golden Eagle Nine will be back in action Saturday, February 25
th when they welcome Penn State Behrend to Derby City Field for their home opener. The first game of the double-header is scheduled for 1pm EST.
