LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University men's soccer team started off conference play with a 5-0 victory over Fontbonne University Saturday afternoon at Champion's Trace. SU's record improves to 3-6 on the season.
Seven minutes into the first half,
Joey Lesher found the back of the net on a penalty kick for the Golden Eagles. After a handball in the box, Lesher placed the ball low post to put SU up 1-0.
Kornell Hilliard scored his fourth goal of the season after beating a Griffin defender followed by a quick finish.
Jacob McMurry soon followed with another goal in the 25
th minute assisted by
Austin Lanham.
Both teams had many opportunities in the second half with SU earning eight shots, and Fontbonne tallying four shots and three corner kicks. However, both teams struggled to finish until the 84
th minute when
Osman Hussein earned SU's fourth goal of the game off a feed from
Sergio Olvera-Vancini. Two minutes later Abdul Abdullahi scored his third goal of the season to give Spalding University the 5-0 win. Keeper for the Golden Eagles,
Ryan Glynn, earned his second shutout of the season.
The men's soccer team will continue SLIAC play, with a 1-0 record, as they take on Westminster College on October 2
nd. The match is set for 2 pm at Champions Trace.
