Golden Eagles lose heartbreaker to Lions, 2-0

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University men's soccer dropped a heartbreaker to Mount Saint Joseph, 2-0, Friday night at the Woehrle Athletic Complex in Jeffersonville, Ind.

For the game, the Golden Eagles played evenly with MSJ, totaling an equal amount of shots by the Lions in both halves, but were unable to find the back of the net. Both teams came out pushing the pace, SU's Finn Kola fired a shot wide just 1:10 into the game and MSJ's Cody Hacker sent a shot on-goal in the 12th minute, but keeper Ryan Glenn was in position for the save. From there, it became a very physical defensive battle with both teams combining for nine fouls and two yellow cards. The Lions got on the scoreboard with header by Teddy Kerr off a Cody Hacker assist in the 33rd minute to send SU into halftime trailing, 1-0.

Despite trailing at the half, the Golden Eagles wouldn't go away in the second half taking seven shots with three on-goals, while earning a 6 to 1 corner advantage. However, it would be the Lions who would find the back of the net when Tyler Schumann slotted a goal in the 68th to push SU's deficit to two goals. The Golden Eagles showed fight down the stretch firing five shot attempts in the final 19 minutes, but were unable to cut into the MSJ lead falling, 2-0.

The Golden Eagles will be back on the pitch Sunday, September 18 at 6:00 pm at Franklin College in Franklin, Ind.
