DANVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University men's soccer team fell to Heidelberg University, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the 27
th Annual Bob Allen Classic at Centre College in Danville, Ky. The loss drops the Golden Eagles to 1-4-0 on the season, while Heidelberg improves to 1-3-0.
Osman Hussein scored the Golden Eagles lone goal, his second goal on the season. Senior
Ryan Glynn took the loss falling to 1-4-1 on the year while making eight saves.
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 deficit into the halftime break following an Alexis Mendoza goal off a feed from Greg Raimondo. SU had four opportunities to slot the equalizer, but two were saved and two
Joey Lesher attempts hit the crossbar sending Spalding to the half trailing.
Spalding came out on the attack in the second half taking four shots in the first nine minutes. The first, a Lesher attempt was blocked and
Jacob McMurry's put back attempt was saved. Then,
Sergio Olvera-Vancini fired a shot wide and O. Hussein had a shot saved by the keeper. The Golden Eagles got on the board in the 60
th minute when O. Hussein fired the equalizer into the upper 90 on a free kick from 22 yards out. Heidelberg responded, scoring the game-winner two minutes later on Mendoza's second goal of the game. The game turned chippy late, with the two teams combining for four yellow cards, and Heidelberg's Kyle Diaz receiving a red card in the 73
rd minute.
With Heidelberg a man down, the Golden Eagles took advantage taking three attempts on-goal, but HU keeper Alex Archambeau was in place to make the save on each attempt and SU fell, 2-1.
The Golden Eagles will be back on the pitch Tuesday, September 13 when they travel to Hanover, Ind. to take on the Panthers of Hanover College at 5pm EST.
