Golden Eagles drop two nail-biters to Eureka, 8-7 and 12-10

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University softball team lost both games of their double header against Eureka, 8-7 and 12-10, Saturday at Holy Cross.

The Golden Eagles lost a heartbreaker in game one giving up three runs in the top of the seventh inning to give Eureka the win, 8-7.

Shelby Kilgore led the Golden Eagles at the plate going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, including a three-run home run. Alyssa McAfee was also 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Robyn Schoen (4-5) took the loss, allowing eight runs, four earned, while striking out seven batters.

Eureka got on the board first with a Lexi Litwiller two-run homer in the first. The Golden Eagles answered with a run in the bottom of the first and third inning to knot the score at two runs apiece. The first run came on an Amanda Gilliland ground out to second allowing Lindsay Hubbard to score, and Kaylin Rucker flied out to left scoring Kilgore from third to tie it at 2-2. The Red Devils scored a run to regain the lead in the fifth, but Kilgore answered in the bottom of the inning with a three-run homer to push SU to the lead, 5-3. Eureka scored two runs in the sixth to tie the score, 5-5, but the Golden Eagles responded with solo homers by Becca Mouser and McAfee to put SU back out front, 7-5, heading into the final inning. Eureka plated three runs in the top of the seventh aided by three Spalding errors sending the Golden Eagles to the home half of the final inning trailing, 8-7. Spalding would put runners on first and second with two outs, but Hubbard was thrown out a second ending the game.

In game two, SU held a 6-1 lead heading into the fifth inning, but Eureka scored 11 runs in the final three innings to top the Golden Eagles, 12-10.

Sam Klein led SU at the plate going 3-for-4 with five RBIs, including two home runs. Kaylin Rucker (0-2) took the loss allowing seven runs on nine hits, while walking two batters.

Similar to game one, Eureka came out of the gate fast scoring a run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Kilgore answered with a single in the bottom of the second scoring McAfee. The Golden Eagle bats exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third to make the SU margin, 6-1. Samantha Klein got it going with a three-run shot to right center to give the Golden Eagles their first lead of the game. SU's final two runs of the inning came on an error at first base allowing Mouser and McAfee to race home. Eureka answered with a six-run top of the fifth inning to erase SU's five-run lead to pull ahead, 7-6. In the sixth, the Red Devils added four more runs to pad their lead on a Rachel Patterson grand slam. The Golden Eagles got three runs back in the bottom of the inning cutting the deficit to two run, 11-9. SU's first run came when Kaylin Rucker doubled scoring Lindsey Hubbard from second. Sam Klein drove in the final two runs of the inning with a two-run bomb to center field. EC scored a run in the top of the seventh to to put SU in a three-run deficit heading into their final at bats. A Gilliland single got the run back getting SU within two runs, but a Becca Mouser fly out to right field ended the game with a 12-10 final score.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action tomorrow hosting a double header at Fontbonne. First pitch is slated for 2:30 at Holy Cross.
