LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University softball team fell to Fontbonne University in consecutive games, 5-0 and 7-2. The losses see the Golden Eagles overall record falls to 7-13, with a 2-4 mark in the SLIAC. The win improves the Griffins' record to 12-9 and they remain undefeated in conference play at 6-0.
In the opener, Fontbonne's Madison Leonard (8-4) earned a no-hit victory as the Griffins blanked the Golden Eagles, 5-0.
Robyn Schoen (4-6) picked up the loss allowing five runs, on 11 hits, while striking out five batters and walking one.
Leonard (9-4) came out for her second straight start and earned her second win of the day. Amber Killburn (3-5) was the losing pitcher in the second contest.
Fontbonne opened the scoring in the first game with a lead-off homerun from Sam Brown. The Griffins would add three runs in the top of third, including a two-run homerun from Emelia Modglin to make it 4-0, Fontbonne. A RBI single from Lindsay Schaefer extended the Griffins lead to 5-0 through five. Spalding hitters were stifled throughout the game as Leonard completed her no-hit bid.
In similar fashion to game one, Fontbonne put up a pair of runs early scoring the first on an Emily Smith double, and Smith came home on a Lindsey Schaefer single up the middle. After a scoreless second inning, the Golden Eagles plated two runs in the bottom of the third to knot the score at two runs apiece.
Kaylin Rucker drove in
Brooke Lamon for the first run, and
Amanda Gilliland singled to right field bringing Shelby Gilgore across the plate to tie it, 2-2. Despite tying it in the third, the Golden Eagles found themselves facing a five-run deficit after giving up five runs in the top if the fourth, four coming on a Maddie Cooksey grand slam, as the Golden Eagles fell, 7-2.
Spalding will be back in action Thursday, April 14
th when they travel to Hanover, Ind. to take on Hanover College in double-header action. The first game is scheduled for 3:30 pm EST, with the second game to follow.
