LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Spalding University softball suffered two losses at the hands of Hanover College, 8-1 and 4-1. The Golden Eagles fall to a 7-15 overall record, while the Panthers improve to 11-12. In the first game, Sydney Griffin (7-3) earned the win, while
Amber Kilburn (2-4) was hit with the loss. The Second game saw Anna Phillippe (4-6) picked up the win, while
Robyn Schoen (3-7) was tagged with the loss.
Brooke Lamon had a strong performance, going 3-for-6 with a RBI.
Shelby Kilgore had a solid outing, going 3-for-6 with a stolen base. Sidney Powers led the way for Hanover, going 4-for-7 with a homerun.
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the top of the first. An error and two walks would load the bases. A failed pickoff attempt would advance the runners and bring
Amanda Gilliland home for a 1-0 lead. Hanover would strike back in the bottom of the second after a single up the middle and a throwing error would allow two runs to score to make it 2-1, Hanover. The panthers would extend their lead to 4-1, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third. A RBI single in the bottom of the fourth pushed Hanover's lead to 5-1. The Panthers would put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth, adding three more runs to make it 8-1. The Golden Eagle offense was unable to find a late rally as they dropped game one.
The Second contest saw Spalding find themselves in an early 2-0 hole in the bottom of the first. The inning was highlighted by a RBI double from McKenzie Writt. Hanover would extend their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third. Powers would hit a solo homerun to left field to make it 4-0, Hanover in the bottom of the sixth. Looking for a rally in the seventh,
Alyssa McAfee doubled with two outs. Lamon followed with a RBI to single to make it 4-1. The Golden Eagles would put runners on second and third, but be unable to find a way to bring them home, ending the comeback bid.
Spalding will be back in action Saturday, April 16
th in Jacksonville, Ill. to take on the MacMurray College Highlanders in double-header action. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 pm EST.
